  • New Application Window for Glastir

The deadline for farmers to apply to join the All-Wales Element of Glastir has been moved following the decision to make available an important additional option within the scheme.
Including the additional option has meant changes to the originally published dates to enable appropriate revisions to be made to the pre-populated Glastir application packs. Application packs will now be issued from 4 October and farmers will have until 22 November to return their completed application form.

  • Sheep Gives Weighty Boost to Charity

    • McCartneys\' Stand at Brecon Show
    • The sheep is weighed by Chris Jones
McCartneys is delighted to have raised more than £100 for the air ambulance through a competition at Brecon Show.

Visitors to the McCartneys’ stand were invited to guess the weight of a sheep, which was in a pen in front of the company’s new exhibition unit. Each guess cost £1, with proceeds going to the air ambulance.

At the end of the day auctioneer Chris Jones weighed the sheep, which was actually 55.5kg.

The winner, who received £20, was Mr. T. Edwards from Chepstow, whose guess was spot on.

“The competition went down really well,” commented Chris Jones of McCartneys. “It was a bit of fun which raised some money for a very worthy cause. A big thank you to everyone who took part.”
  • McCartneys Moves into Plant and Machinery Sales

    • Michael Thomas is overseeing the plant and machinery sales
McCartneys is delighted to announce it’s branching out – from September the company will be holding regular plant and machinery sales.

The sales will be held at a purpose-built site at Little Hereford, just a few miles from Ludlow, and close to the A49, offering easy access by road.

All types of plant equipment and machinery will be sold – from vehicles, to building equipment, to workshop tools and farm machinery, and the sales will be open to everyone.

“As one of the region’s main auctioneers we’ve been looking to hold machinery sales, and now we have an ideal site, it’s full steam ahead,” said Michael Thomas, partner with McCartneys, who will be one of the auctioneers at the new sales.

“We already have a list of more than 1000 potential customers, who will be sent the catalogue for each sale. The details will also be on our website and on Autotrader, so we should have a strong trade.

“The Beeches in Little Hereford is tailor-made for this type of sale, and its position means people can easily access it. There’s definitely a demand for these sales and we’re looking forward to bringing our auctioneering expertise into a new area for us.”

The first sale at The Beeches will be on September 11th at 11.30am.

Anyone wishing to enter lots or who would like more information should contact Michael Thomas at McCartneys on 01584 872251 or 07890 898239.
  • Productive Farm For Sale

    • Gellidwyll Farm
    • Gellidwyll Farmhouse
A productive livestock farm in a beautiful setting is on the market through McCartneys.

Gellidwyll Farm, just outside the small village of Glascwm in the unspoilt Powys countryide, has an attractive 4 bedroom farmhouse, modern and traditional farm buildings, just under 124 acres of pastureland and deciduous woodland, and extensive hill grazing rights.

The farm, which has been in the same family for a number of years and is approximately 12 miles from Kington and 9 miles from Builth Wells, is for sale as a whole or in four lots.

The period farmhouse is a traditional Welsh stone and slate building and is in an elevated position, with stunning views. The land has, in recent years, carried a good level of suckler cows and breeding ewes, producing good quality livestock.

Adjacent to the farmhouse is a range of traditional stone farm buildings, which may have development potential for other uses, subject to local planning authority permissions.

Gellidwyll Farm is for sale by formal tender and tenders close Tuesday 24th August.

  • Standing Out From the Crowd at the Royal Welsh Show

    • McCartneys Chairman John Uffold Meets the Royal Welsh Lady Ambassador, Teleri Jenkins-Davies
Despite some indifferent weather in Builth Wells, McCartneys enjoyed a hugely successful Royal Welsh Show, welcoming hundreds of clients, old and new, to the company’s stand.

It was the first outing of McCartneys’ new exhibition unit, which was well-received by everyone and stood out amongst the crowd.

Among the visitors who popped in for refreshments and a chat over the four days, was the Royal Welsh Lady Ambassador, Teleri Jenkins-Davies, whose role is to promote the importance of farming across Wales and far beyond.

Mrs Jenkins-Davies was greeted by McCartneys’ chairman, John Uffold, who spoke to her about farming issues and the up coming Welsh Winter Fair, at which McCartneys are the auctioneers.
  • McCartneys Is Street Views Ahead

There’s a new added bonus for anyone buying or selling a house through leading local estate agent McCartneys – their properties and the areas they are in can now be explored via online panoramic images.

McCartneys has become one of the first agents in the area to offer a direct link with Google Maps Street View, which allows potential purchasers to explore a property and its neighbourhood through street-level photographs - you can move up and down streets, or look around in 360 degree panoramas.

“We’re delighted to offer a link up with Street View, which allows us to offer a new and exciting way to explore the properties we have on the market” commented Debbie Anderson, chairman of McCartneys property department. “It is a real bonus for anyone looking to buy, allowing them to get a real feel for the property and where it is before even visiting.

“On a property’s details on our website – www.mccartneys.co.uk – all you have to do is click on the Street View icon and it will take you directly to the property and you can navigate around the area - it’ll help when you do view a property as well as you’ll already know where you’re going!”
  • Land Sells Well at Auction

    • Pastureland at Llanbister sold for £64,500 at auction
Pastureland at Llanbister sold well at a recent auction held by McCartneys’ Knighton office.

Bidding for the 13.22 acres at the auction, held at the Baron of Beef in Bucknell, was strong and soon passed the guide price of £60,000. It was eventually sold for £64,500.

“It was good to see the land sell well,” commented auctioneer Jenny Layton. “The auction was busy and there is a great deal of interest in good land for sale. We hope to hold more land and property auctions in the autumn.”

  • For Sale For The First Time A Gem With An Unusual Name

    • Gripes Nest - For Sale by Auction
Looking out over her garden in the spring sunshine, Barbara Beamond ponders who might be interested in buying her house.

“Maybe a couple wanting a bit of ‘the Good Life’ or a family wanting to escape from the pressures of the city. It’s a really quiet spot here. You see more deer than people!”

Barbara’s house is indeed in a tranquil spot. Nestled amongst woodland and rolling fields at the end of a private lane just outside the village of Bedstone in Shropshire, many would say the location is, in fact, idyllic.

The property is called Gripes Nest (Barbara has no idea why) and is set in 45 acres. It’s a working farm which, for the first time in its history, is for sale on the open market.

Barbara, who is now in her 60s, and her late husband Alan moved to Gripes Nest with their two young sons 36 years ago - firstly as tenants and then as owners after they bought the property in 1987.

“When the boys were growing up they used to be outside all the time, fishing in the river or playing in the fields,” says Barbara. “I’ll be really sad to leave – it’s a very special place.”

Parts of the house, which has three bedrooms and two reception rooms, date back to the 17th century and it used to be a single storey thatched building.

Barbara kept sheep on some of the land, and there are useful outbuildings and barns near to the house.

“Gripes Nest is a real gem,” commented Jenny Layton of McCartneys, who is selling the property by auction in June. “The setting is truly wonderful and is very much off the beaten track. The house is full of character and the land would make good grazing for livestock, or could just be used for personal enjoyment.”

Gripes Nest, Darkey Dale is being sold by auction at The Baron of Beef, Bucknell on Thursday 24th June at 6pm.
